I’m still in a state of shock and surprise to hear that ‘Bradwell from Tollesbury’ has been shortlisted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2022 – I had to read the email 3 times to make sure!

The painting is on canvas and is a mixed media landscape of Tollesbury salt marshes in Essex a weird and wonderful place, overlooking the river Blackwell estuary across to Bradwell sands and the decommissioned power station and is one of a series I’ve made of the area.

Sea painting – techniques

I did a couple of quick paintings depicting the sea last week. I started by priming the canvases with gesso which I applied with a palette knife, then spattered more on top to create a textures surface to start painting on. Painting techniques included scraping paint across the canvas with a palette knife then flicking and splattering more paint on top.

Experiments with mixed media

image transfer experimentThese images were created using matte gel as an image transfer medium. When gel was tacky, the images from magazines were laid face down on the gel surface. Once completely dry, the paper was removed by wetting it and gently peeling it away, leaving the reverse of the printed image.
